Conference on “Humanity in the Age of AI”

September 25-27, 2025
Academia Catholica, Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan

The advent of artificial intelligence systems, epitomized by the release of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, has unleashed a technological revolution reshaping humanity as we know it. This large language model, capable of generating human-like text, marked not merely a technological breakthrough but ushered in an unprecedented societal shift. The arrival of these systems has ignited a global discourse marked by awe, anxiety, and uncertainty.

The Proponents of this technology paint a future where AI liberates humanity from mundane tasks, amplifies human creativity, and accelerates scientific discovery. They envision a harmonious symbiosis where AI augments human capabilities, enabling us to tackle global challenges with efficiency and ingenuity. From personalized medicine to climate change mitigation, the potential for positive transformation seems boundless.

However, this optimistic narrative is counterbalanced by growing voices of concern, as the rapid advancement of AI technologies raises ethical dilemmas and existential anxieties. Worries about job displacement, algorithmic bias, the erosion of privacy, the potential for misuse in warfare and surveillance, the manipulation of public opinion through AI-generated propaganda, and the possibility for AI to surpass human intelligence loom large.

Beneath the fervor surrounding the rapid rise of AI, there is a deeper, more profound set of questions on what this technology means for humanity: What does it mean to be human in a world increasingly shaped by intelligent machines? How do we define creativity, intelligence, and consciousness in the face of AI systems that can mimic human language, compose music, and even generate original artwork? Before addressing specific ethical dilemmas, such as whether submitting AI-generated homework is acceptable, we must reevaluate the foundational principles of our education systems. Before debating the artistic merit of AI-generated creations, we must reconsider the essence of human creativity. Before forecasting job displacement due to automation, we must reflect on the more profound question: Why do we work? And before entertaining the idea of AI deities, we need to reflect on the significance of religious faith and spirituality in our lives. The conference, "Humanity in the Age of AI," seeks to provide a platform for an interdisciplinary exploration of these critical issues.

We invite researchers from various fields to engage in meaningful discussions exploring this transformative technology's ethical, social, economic, and cultural implications. The goal is not just to react to the rapid advancements in AI but to proactively shape the future we want to create. This requires a concerted effort to understand the profound changes underway, to anticipate potential challenges, and to ensure that AI serves the needs and aspirations of humanity.
