International Conference on the Centenary of the First Six Chinese Bishops and the 80th Anniversary of the Chinese Catholic Hierarchy
CALL FOR PAPERS
Dear Scholars,
On October 28, 1926, Pope Pius XI consecrated six Chinese bishops in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome: Bishop Philip Zhao Huaiyi of Xuanhua (Hebei), Bishop Melchior Sun Dezhen of Lixian (Hebei), Bishop Joseph Hu Ruoshan of Taizhou (Zhejiang), Bishop Odorico Cheng Hede of Puqi (Hubei), Bishop Aloysius Chen Guodi of Fenyang (Shanxi), and Bishop Simon Zhu Kaimin of Haimen (Jiangsu). This landmark event brought to an end more than two centuries in which all Catholic bishops in China had been foreign missionaries, a phenomenon that had prevailed since the tenure of Bishop Gregory Luo Wenzao as Apostolic Vicar of Nanjing (1685–1691). Thereafter, the Catholic Church in China, together with mission territories in Asia and Africa, gradually established a system in which local dioceses were administered by indigenous bishops. Over the past century, this process has culminated in a fully indigenized ecclesiastical structure. Foreign missionaries have nonetheless continued to serve the Kingdom of God wherever pastoral needs remain.
On the occasion of this centennial commemoration and celebration, we keenly recognize a special sense of mission and therefore convene this international conference. For the Chinese Regional Bishops’ Conference, this historical trajectory symbolizes the maturation of the local Church and highlights its role as a coordinating and collaborative body in promoting evangelization. For Fu Jen Catholic University, its establishment and continuity in both China and Taiwan are deeply embedded in the historical development of the local Church; Cardinal Paul Yu Pin, Cardinal Thomas Tien Ken-sin, and Archbishop Stanislaus Lo Kuang all played pivotal roles in this institutional legacy. For the Ferdinand Verbiest Institute Taipei, sustained engagement has contributed in part to the healthy development of the local Church, and it continues to function as a small yet meaningful cog within the broader network of “bridge churches.” We collectively recognize that indigenous bishops have been central to the growth of local Churches, while also acknowledging that this historical process warrants further critical reflection and scholarly reassessment.
Scholars conducting research in related fields are cordially invited to submit paper proposals. Suggested themes include, but are not limited to:
n The development of Chinese bishops and individual dioceses before 1949
n Interactions among indigenous bishops, foreign bishops, and missionaries in the Chinese Church
n The development of the local Church in Taiwan, indigenous bishops, and the Bishops’ Conference after 1949
n The appointment of Chinese bishops and diocesan development in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Malaysia
n Contemporary episcopal appointments in China and church–state relations
Conference Dates: October 16–17, 2026
Venue: St. Paul Hall, 4/F., Zhuozhang Building, Fu Jen Catholic University
Please submit your paper title, abstract, and brief biographical information via the Google Form below by March 20. Proposals will be reviewed, and notification of acceptance will be sent by the end of April.
